The real point here was that there might be unforeseen situations, in the future, when I would want or need to install Windows 7 on a computer or in a VM, and at that point I would probably want to avoid having to chase around to a bunch of different websites, each of which could potentially harbor malware capable of piercing Win7’s increasingly weak boundaries.

I planned to keep my Win7 VMs and installations offline except when it was necessary to take them online (e.g., to register or update software), and in any case did not plan to use them for random Web browsing. Of course, Win7 would be less secure than Win10 going forward, and that gap would increase as new security threats emerged and were not met by relevant Windows updates. A Win7 VM might also be useful if I didn’t have a license for a Win10 VM, or if I wanted a relatively lightweight VM (i.e., requiring less from CPU, RAM, or disk space). As described in another post, I found that I was able to keep right on running APE in a Win7 virtual machine (VM) without any of the validation errors that were suddenly cropping up in Windows 10. I had recently encountered an example of this, when Adobe rudely surprised me by manipulating the arrival of Windows 10 to render my copy of Adobe Premiere Elements (APE) nonfunctional. For instance, I might have software, or data accessible by software, or functions performed by software, that would only run (or at least would only run the way I preferred) on Windows 7. I had seen situations where it might continue to be useful for me. That did not mean Windows 7 ceased to be useful. But for most users and most purposes, Windows 7 ceased to be a relatively secure operating system this past January 14. Microsoft did continue to offer Extended Security Updates for Windows 7 for businesses, at a price, on an annual basis until January 10, 2023. We had previously seen that, on rare occasions, Microsoft might still issue security updates to protect against special threats. This meant that Microsoft then ceased to provide updates. Windows 7 reached its official end-of-life date on January 14, 2020.
